The interstate on ramp from KY 801 to westbound I-64 in Rowan County will be closed overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

Drivers who plan on travelling this holiday weekend could expect some road delays due to the closure. It will begin at 9 o’clock Thursday night and won’t reopen until 6 a.m. Friday. Officials said contractors are replacing a pipe and making drainage repairs under the roadway.

Allen Blair is the information officer for Kentucky Department of Highways District 9. He said this weekend’s weather could cause a delay for construction.

“We try to schedule these in advance so the public knows when we’re closing a road, but weather can change those things. Weather can change those things, so if that would be the case we will send another press release,” Blair said. “We’ll make some public notices on our social media and the message boards on the interstate will notify the public that there’s been a change. As of right now the work is continuing for overnight Thursday.”

Officials said all traffic from KY 801 needing access to westbound I-64 overnight Thursday should detour to US 60 or to KY 158 and use KY 32 to the Morehead exit. Travelers may also reroute to the Owingsville exits.

The work is part of a $6.8 million Kentucky Transportation Cabinet project to improve nearly six miles of Interstate 64 in Rowan County.

“Around the Farmers-Sharkey exit, Exit 133, there’s going to be construction on I-64 between the Bath county-Rowan county line and the Bull Fork road overpass on I-64. It’s about five miles of new blacktop and some other work. We will be having lane closures on that section of I-64. So, people do need to be mindful of that,” said Blair.

Blair added to be mindful of driving while in construction zones to keep workers and drivers safe. More information about detours as well as updates on construction can be found at https://goky.ky.gov/.
