State Plow Crews in NE Kentucky Work to Clear Roads After Artic Storm

State plow crews remain out in force on northeast Kentucky roads today battling snow-covered pavement and arctic temperatures.

As of 11 a.m., state highway conditions vary, but are considered mostly to partly covered with snow across Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, and Rowan counties. Air temps are below zero, -6 to -1 degrees. Pavement temperatures are below freezing.

Slick and hazardous driving conditions are expected throughout the day and night as continued sub-zero and single-digit temperatures make salt less effective and high winds blow snow back across roadways.

Motorists should stay off roads, if at all possible, for your own protection and to give plows room to work. If travel is necessary, be prepared:

❄️ - Pack an emergency car kit with enough supplies for everyone in the vehicle

❄️ - Make sure your car is winterized

❄️ - Check goky.ky.gov or the free WAZE app for traffic and road conditions

❄️ - Expect delays - leave early to get to your destination

❄️ - Keep a full tank of gas

❄️ - Take it slow and leave lots of room between you and the car ahead

Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 salt truck and plow crews started working at 8 p.m. Thursday, and worked all night. A second shift came on duty at 8 a.m. today and will work into the evening hours plowing and treating roads as needed.

While road conditions are expected to improve Saturday, snow and ice impacts could still affect driving conditions. Follow District 9 on social media – @KYTCDistrict9 on Facebook and Twitter – for updates.
