Weather Warnings Issued For Eastern Kentucky Through Thursday

The National Weather Service in Jackson (KY) has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 1pm on Wednesday, March 4 through 1pm on Thursday, March 5.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Flash Flood Warning for most of Kentucky, including the eastern Kentucky counties of Bath, Breathitt, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Lee, Menifee, Powell, Montgomery, Morgan, Rowan and Wolfe until 4pm on Wednesday, March 4.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, followed by heavy snow is expected Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening throughout eastern Kentucky.

Rain will change to a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain tonight. A significant amount of snowfall and ice accumulations are expected. Snow will eventually taper off by Thursday afternoon and evening.

Snow and sleet accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are likely with this storm. Travel will become hazardous and not recommended. The wet and heavy snow will also cause stress on weak structures and could lead to downed power lines and trees with power outages possible.

Travel only in an emergency and if travel is necessary, carry a flashlight with extra batteries with blankets, food and water in the vehicle. Notify others where you are headed, what time you are leaving and when you arrive. Keep roads clear as much as possible to allow the safe passage of transportation crews and emergency vehicles.

Radar indicates the possibility of up to two inches of rain could fall by mid-afternoon with rainfall rates of one quarter to a half inch per hour. The saturated ground will likely overwhelm ditches and culverts, small streams and creeks.

Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway as flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. One foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
