MSU Athletics

Morehead State's men's basketball's Johni Broome and Skyelar Potter have garnered official Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, with Broome being named the league's Co-Player of the Year, and the Eagles being picked to finish second.

The preseason polls and All-OVC teams came out this week ahead of the league's media days on Wednesday. After winning the tournament in 2020-21, the Eagle men received high praise from the rest of the league coaches and media relations' personnel. Along with Belmont's Grayson Murphy, Broome was the co-pick for the conference's most accomplished player.

Broome, a Tampa, Fla., native, had a storybook freshman season. Not expected to start, he was thrust onto the scene after a preseason injury and proceeded to continually improve and eventually was named the league's Freshman of the Year as well as to several All-American teams.

In addition to being named First-Team All-OVC, he was also tabbed to the OVC All-Newcomer Team, OVC All-Tournament Team and was the OVC Tournament MVP.

Broome was a nine-time OVC Freshman of the Week award winner and was also named Lou Henson & Lute Olson National Player of the Week by College Insider during the season. He was chosen to the Kyle Macy National Freshman All-America Team and was a Lou Henson All-America Team and Player of the Year Finalist by College Insider. He was also tabbed NABC First-Team All-District 18.

Broome set the Morehead State men's basketball freshman rebounding (271) & blocks record (56), surpassing former great Kenneth Faried. He played in 30 games and started in 27, averaging 25.8 minutes per game. Broome shot .571 from the field to rank third in the OVC. He averaged 9.0 rebounds per game, ranking second overall in the OVC, while leading the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game. He also led OVC in blocked shots in league games with 38 (2.0/game). Broome also finished season with 13 double-doubles, ranking tied for 11th in the NCAA . He scored career-high 27 points in OVC Championship game against Belmont.

Potter, a transfer from Wright State, was as consistent as they get last year. He was named to the OVC All-Newcomer Team and OVC All-Tournament Team and was a two-time OVC Newcomer of the Week.

Potter played in 30 games and started in 25, averaging 30.5 minutes per game. He averaged 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, which was second on the team and also shot .454 from the floor and led the team in three-point shooting percentage at .389. Potter scored a career-high 22 points twice (vs. Clemson & Belmont in the OVC Championship game) and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against SIUE.

The Eagles will start the defense of their OVC title on Nov. 4 with a home exhibition game versus Kentucky State, followed by the regular season opener at Auburn on Nov. 9.
