Soccer Falls to SIU in Overtime

MSU Athletics

After playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation, the Morehead State Soccer team fell to Southern Illinois, 2-1, when Salukis' midfielder Ellie Lewis scored the match-winning golden goal on a free kick in the 92nd minute on Sunday afternoon at Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.

The Eagles struck first in the match when freshman midfielder Gabby Nastasi put home her second goal of the 2019 season in the 14th minute. With the goal, Nastasi now leads MSU in goals (2) and points (4).

SIU answered quickly with the equalizing goal as forward Madison Meiring was able to get one past Morehead State freshman goalkeeper Grace Gaffney in the 24th minute.

The teams played neck-and-neck for the remainder of regulation with both firing 13 shot attempts and taking six corners a piece.

The 13 shot attempts by the Eagles stamped a season-high for shot attempts on the road. Junior midfielder Katie Quinn paced MSU with three shots in the match.

In goal, Gaffney tied a career-best save total with three on 13 shots faced. For the Salukis, goalkeepers Dariana Mihalache started and played the first 45 minutes before Maddy Alaluf finished the match. Alaluf recorded four saves while Mihalache saved two.

Southern Illinois improved to 4-4-1 and snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.

In defeat, Morehead State falls to 1-6 overall. The loss was the Eagles second overtime loss of the season, having dropped a 2-1 double overtime contest at home to Miami (OH) on Sept. 6.

MSU will now shift its focus to Ohio Valley Conference play as they prepare for weekend road tests against Tennessee Tech on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET and Jacksonville State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Eagles defeated both league foes in 2018 at home, earning a 2-0 win over TTU and a 3-1 triumph against JSU.
