Pair of Eagle Alums Set to be Inducted Into Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame

MSU Athletics

Two Morehead State women's basketball alums, and former teammates, will be bestowed a prestigious honor this weekend when they are inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Robin (Harmon) Newsome and Irene (Moore) Strong (both of whom played at MSU from 1978-82) are part of the class of 2019 who will be inducted on Saturday at the State Theater in Elizabethtown. The Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Elizabethtown.

Harmon Newsome came to Morehead State after an illustrious career at Sheldon Clark High School in Inez. She led her team to a 96-8 record during her four years. She led the state in scoring, averaging 32 points per game, as a senior.

She had an equally successful career for the Eagles from 1978-82 and currently ranks seventh on the school career scoring list with 1,599 points. A 49 percent career shooter who ranks third all-time at MSU with 735 field goals made, Harmon Newsome also ranks fifth in career games played with 121.

She became the head coach of her high school alma mater and accumulated more than 500 wins and four regional titles while also being inducted into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Moore Strong was a teammate of Harmon Newsome on head coach Mickey Wells' highly successful Eagle teams of the late 1970s and early 1980s. She still ranks second in career assists at Morehead State with 499 and ranks 20th in career scoring with 1,219 points.

Her 178 assists in 1980-81 still ranks as the third highest single-season total in program history, and she still co-owns the single-game assist record with 16 against Northern Kentucky that year.

She starred at Breathitt County School in Jackson and was named Miss Basketball in 1978 before earning state tournament MVP honors.
