Steele Leads MSU Women's Basketball to 82-72 Comeback Win at Southeast Missouri

MSU Athletics

Morehead State women's basketball (18-6, 8-3 Ohio Valley Conference) charged back from a deficit as large as 12 to defeat Southeast Missouri (10-14, 4-7 OVC) Saturday evening on the road.

Shay Steele fronted the come-from-behind win for the Eagles with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-15 (.533) shooting, as well as seven rebounds and four steals.

"Shay battled hard," said head coach Greg Todd. "We received an excellent effort from her today."

Brianna McQueen - the second of five MSU players to score in double-figures - followed Steele with 19 points, five assists, and five boards. 5-foot-4 guard Darianne Seward finished with 13 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, while Miranda Crockett tallied 12 points and five boards. Junior Eriel McKee finished just shy of a potential sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Morehead State made its living on the glass, converting 18 offensive rebounds into 20 second chance points. The Eagles outrebounded the Redhawks 51-39 overall, besting SEMO's 34 points in the paint with 42 of their own.

Morehead State ended the first quarter shooting just 4-of-17 (.235) from the floor, and entered halftime down 35-30. A strong second-half surge, however, saw the Eagles recover by way of an 18-for-35 (.514) performance from the field. Morehead State rounded out the game shooting 30-of-75 (.400) as a team.

The Eagles have now won six games away from home, with three wins coming in OVC play. Morehead State will take a break from action for an entire week, returning on Feb. 11 with a matchup at Eastern Kentucky at 4:30 p.m. ET.
