Former Eagle Anthony Elechi Signs with Glasgow Rocks

Morehead State Athletics

Former Morehead State men's basketball standout Anthony Elechi has signed to play with the Glasgow Rocks of the British Basketball League (BBL).

Formerly known as the Scottish Rocks and Edinburgh Rocks, Glasgow is the only BBL team to be based in Scotland, playing at the Emirates Arena.

"It's an exciting feeling, it's a dream come true pretty much. As a kid I always wanted to play professional basketball, so this is me living out my dream. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to go out there and hopefully help my team win some games," said Elechi on signing with the Rocks.

The Elmont, N.Y., native started all 37 games as a senior for Morehead State, averaging 8.3 points and 5.5 rebounds. He had 16 double-digit scoring performances and recorded a double-double, with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, in the 81-74 win against Tennessee Tech. He ranked fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference in offensive rebounds (2.7) and seventh in field goal percentage (.533).

He also put up 17 points and nine rebounds in the Eagles' 75-66 win over Murray State in the quarterfinals of the OVC Tournament.

"I'm a hard working guy and will do whatever the coaching staff asks me to do. I can do a lot of things, and I think my versatility will translate well at the professional level. Last year we switched everything (on defense), and I pretty much had to guard all five positions and that's what teams are looking for nowadays," said Elechi.

The Glasgow Rocks are coached by Sterling Davis, an American-born citizen and former standout at Tulane University.

"Anthony is a natural-born hard worker. He had a very solid college career on which his coaches had nothing but promising things to say about his production," said Davis. "He will bring us great energy on both ends of the floor along with athleticism and strength. What drew me to him was how crafty he was around the basket and determination to rebound the ball."

Elechi credits his coaching staff at Morehead State for preparing him for the next level.

"Coach Woods helped me a lot because he made me understand that it's never going to be given to you and that you really have to work for everything," he said.

In 2015-16, Elechi helped lead the Eagles to a 23-14 record and a trip to the College Basketball Invitational Finals.
