Eagle Baseball Earns More Postseason Honors

Baseball

The Morehead State baseball program has landed more postseason awards, this time from College Sports Madness. Senior catcher/outfielder Chris Robinson is a Fourth-Team All-American, while third-year leader Mike McGuire is the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

Six Eagles have also been selected to CSM's All-OVC teams. Robinson, senior left fielder Nick Newell, senior right fielder Brandon Rawe, senior shortstop Robby Spencer and senior first baseman Kane Sweeney are first-team honorees, while sophomore Ryan Kent is a second-team choice.

Robinson leads the league in batting average (.412), hits (98), runs (77) and total bases (160), while ranking third in doubles (25) and RBI (69). A native of Uxbridge, Ontario, he also places second nationally in hits, runs and total bases, fourth in RBI, fifth in batting average and sixth in doubles.

Robinson earned 2015 OVC Player of the Year honors in a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. He also owns a .672 slugging percentage and .480 on-base mark. The third-year Eagle needs just one hit and three runs to establish single-season school records.

Newell, a native of Dyersburg, Tenn., has recorded a .366 batting average, .584 slugging percentage and .410 on-base mark. He has collected a school-record 28 doubles and needs just one in that category to tie the all-time conference standard. Newell ranks fourth on the squad with 58 RBI.

Rawe, from Matthews, N.C., has tallied a .357 batting average, .592 slugging percentage and .439 on-base percentage. He ranks second on the team with 12 homers and has 50 RBI. Rawe has notched 90 hits in back-to-back campaigns after setting the school record with 98 in 2014.

Spencer, who hails from El Paso, Texas, has turned in a .336 batting average, .534 slugging percentage and .400 on-base mark. He is tied for the team lead with 69 RBI and has crossed the plate 56 times. Spencer owns a .961 fielding percentage with 140 assists and just nine errors.

Sweeney, a native of Millstadt, Ill., owns a .352 batting average, .621 slugging percentage and .483 on-base clip. He leads the Eagles with 14 round-trippers and 52 walks, while ranking third in runs (63) and RBI (60). Sweeney carries a team-best 35-game on-base streak into the NCAA Regional.

Kent, who hails from Winfield, Ill., has posted a .352 batting average, .471 slugging percentage and .454 on-base percentage. He has drawn 34 walks and been hit by a pitch on 13 occasions. Kent paces the Eagles with a .988 fielding percentage and ranks third on the squad with 63 runs.

Morehead State is coming off its first OVC Tournament championship since 1993. The Eagles will make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1983 this weekend at Louisville. MSU finished OVC play 20-10 and enters Friday's tilt 38-20 overall. Both win totals are school records.
