Morehead State Tennis Duo Claims Doubles Title

MSU Athletics

Morehead State sophomores Ritchie Kruunenberg and Gabriel Ruiz claimed the championship of the No. 1 doubles flight at the River Forest Invitational to highlight the opening weekend of the fall season for the men's tennis team.

Kruunenberg, a transfer from Ohio Dominican and a native of the Netherlands, and Ruiz, from Bolivia, warded off three opponent pairs to win the title. They opened with an 8-2 victory against Jeremy Schneider and Arthur Stefani of Xavier. The pair then ousted Youngstown State's Dawoud Kabli and Bassem Mekawi, 8-2. They won the flight by topping Maurizio Feoli and Carl Hedstrom of Illinois-Chicago, 8-2.

Kruunenberg also claimed one singles win, defeating Remi Chancereal of Youngstown State, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9, in the opening round of flight A. Ruiz fell into the consolation draw of flight B singles but finished the tournament with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 triumph over YSU's Gabriel Tolesani.

Junior Nick Mercer and Enrique Samudio and freshmen Tyler Edlin and Robby Berry also competed for the Eagles.

Morehead State is back in action next weekend at the Indiana University Invitational in Bloomington.
