Sweeney Named OVC Baseball Player of the Week

MSU Athletics

Morehead State junior first baseman Kane Sweeney has been named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the period of May 12-18. It is his second career weekly honor from the league office and MSU's first since May 6, 2013.

Sweeney hit .421 (8-for-19) with eight runs and 12 RBI during the four-game stretch. He recorded two doubles, one triple, two homers and six walks while not striking out in 25 plate appearances. The native of Millstadt, Ill., also collected 32 putouts and two assists with no errors.

Sweeney helped Morehead State register 50 runs last week. The Eagles dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 decision in 12 innings at Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee on Tuesday, but rebounded in their final conference series to take two of three from Jacksonville State.

Sweeney launched a grand slam en route to five RBI against Tennessee. He added four RBI in the series opener against Jacksonville State, went 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBI in a 13-inning affair on Friday and hit safely for the ninth time in 10 games in the regular-season finale.

Sweeney has 21 multi-hit efforts in 2014 and is one of just two MSU players to start all 54 games. He owns a .313 batting average, .426 on-base percentage and .525 slugging percentage. The left-handed hitter has also tallied 17 doubles, nine homers, 39 runs and a team-high 47 RBI.

The annual Ohio Valley Conference Tournament is this week in Jackson, Tenn. Fifth-seeded Morehead State opens against fourth-seeded SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
