MSU Athletics

The Morehead State men's tennis team claimed its third consecutive win Saturday (Feb. 22), defeating the visiting Lipscomb Bisons 5-2 at Sadler Courts.

The Eagles moved to 3-2, while LU dropped to 1-4.

MSU got doubles victories on courts one and three to nail down the opening point. On court one, senior Ji Hoon Heo teamed with freshman Jack Swindells for an 8-2 triumph against Miguel Cortez and Stuart Tierney. At No. 3, freshman Gabriel Ruiz and sophomore Giovanni Samaha ousted Daniel Hernandez and Nacor Ibanez 8-2. Sophomores Nick Mercer and Enrique Samudio absorbed an 8-6 setback to Rob Mitchell and David Salazar.

The hosts quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead when Lipscomb's No. 1 player, Salazar, sustained an injury diving for a drop shot hit by Swindells. Swindells was leading 3-0 in the first set when Salazar retired.

MSU also collected singles wins at Nos. two, five and six. Ruiz topped Ibanez 6-0, 6-1 on court six. Senior David Clifford edged Hernandez 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5. Samaha rallied past Tierney 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 for the win at No. 2. On court three, Heo lost 6-4, 6-4 to Mitchell, and Mercer finally dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 decision to Cortez on court four.

The Eagles are idle during the week before hosting Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1.
