State Approves New Lewis County Bus Garage

Dennis Brown, The Ledger Independent

Plans for new bus garage building for the Lewis County School District have been approved by the Kentucky Department of Education.

Board of Education Chairman Bryan McRoberts said while KDE has given approval to break ground on footers for the new building, the district is waiting on approval from their insurance company to demolish the old building.

"Architect, contractor, KDE, insurance adjuster and board office communicate multiple times per week to get plans designed and approved, but several more requirements must be met before construction may begin," McRoberts said.

He did not specify what those requirements may be.

Trace Creek Construction will be completing the new building, which will be built at the site of the current building on Old Lock and Dam Road, about four miles outside Vanceburg, according to Lewis County Schools Director of District Services Nick Adams.

The former bus garage was destroyed in a fire in the early morning hours of Nov. 19.

The fire was spotted by a CSX conductor on a passing train at approximately 3:30 a.m. Dispatch was contacted and Adams was notified at 4:02 a.m.

"The gate was locked," Adams said in November. "We don't believe there was any foul play involved in the fire, but the cause is still unknown."

According to Adams, the bus garage had been used in the school district for about 30 years. The garage was closed and the Lewis County High School Agricultural building was chosen as the temporary location to house buses.

No people or buses were harmed in the fire.
