Lawmakers Play Defense On State Budget

Nation Of Blue

As Kentucky lawmakers prepare to work over the weekend on a new state budget, tonight's (March 28) basketball game between the Louisville Cardinals and the Kentucky Wildcats is tempering their appetite for hard work.

Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers criticized House Speaker Greg Stumbo for putting college hoops above his legislative duties, saying he's more interested in basketballs than budgets.

“Speaker Stumbo was the one that said ‘we need to stick with the schedule.’ He gets adamant, and I think he plays the press on the game: ‘Well, we’re gonna be scheduled,’ and then they don’t want to be scheduled,” said Stivers.

Stumbo says he sold his tickets earlier this week to be available for the budget conference, but says he intends to watch the game, budget or not, when the rival teams tip off at 10:00PM.

Stivers says if a budget document isn’t produced soon, he will negotiate directly with Gov. Steve Beshear.
