Reinvestment In Education To Be Budget Focus

IXL Learning

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says he'll look at expanded gaming and tax reform to shore up budget shortfalls and to help pay for reinvestments in education.

In a sit-down interview with reporters in his Capitol office on Tuesday (Dec. 17), Beshear said he would try to find money to put toward school safety and textbooks.

“We’re gonna have to find the political will to take some step to create enough revenue that we can make those reinvestments. And there are two areas that I’m determined that we look at: One is tax reform, and that is modernizing our tax system so that as our economy grows our revenues will grow; and the other is expanded gaming.” –Gov. Steve Beshear

Beshear did not specify what tax reform measures he would advocate in his budget, but did indicate that he favors taxing services that are currently not taxed.

The General Assembly meets in January to put together a two-year state budget.
