Campus organizations stay connected online

Morehead State University

Campus organizations are finding it difficult to operate normally after Morehead State University closed for the semester, but there are still attempts being made to keep everyone connected.

One way organizations with cancelled activities are staying involved is through motivational or informative social media posts.

“Most of our planned activities for this semester had been cancelled,” said Minh Tran, the president of the Pre-Medicine Club. “The only thing that we have been doing is to periodically update followers on Instagram about COVID-19, or yesterday was the National Doctors Day, so we added a story on Instagram to honor doctors.”

While some groups are unable to do anything, some can transfer their activities online. For example, Campus Activities Board held a digital conference discussing COVID-19 and is planning to hold other online activities to keep students’ spirits up.

Organizations such as the Student Government Association are taking their weekly meetings to digital conferences, providing structure and clear communication within their groups.

Along with discussing and passing initiatives for student issues in a new learning environment, SGA is also attempting to provide $2,000 to their Counseling & Health Services partnership and funding towards Eagle Essentials.

“The students can go in and receive certain medical diagnoses and medical tests they would otherwise not be able to afford, and they can tap into that SGA fund,” said Colby Birkes, MSU senior and SGA president. “It’s going to be really important that they have that while they are not able to be on campus.”

SGA is also continuing their annual Student Choice Awards in an online format, in order to let students know that just because their college experience ended abruptly, their accomplishments will not go unnoticed.

“If we all work together, we can flatten this COVID-19 curve and we can really get back to the campus that we all love,” said Birkes.
