Mentors Needed For Youth Program

Venture Atlanta

The leader of a Kentucky non-profit hopes to convince teenagers to help end violence.

Doug Wain says young people are the best mentors when it comes to youth violence reduction.  Wain and his wife, a teacher in Fayette County, formed Youth Alert about two years ago.  Youth Alert aims to establish youth action teams in every Kentucky County.

Wain says volunteer coordinators will be sought continually.

"We hope for a new batch every year, a bunch of new volunteers every year.  But, again, the ultimate goal is a ten percent reduction in all violence in Kentucky and we're gonna build as many chapters as it takes to help do that."

Wain says 30 hours of video information from previous youth alert events will be distributed to county coordinators.  He says leadership and peace building skills will be taught during chapter meetings.
