Mason County Schools Tax Increase

The Mason County school board has approved a 4% property tax increase following a public hearing Wednesday evening. Superintendent Rick Ross says the higher rate will generate an additional $160,000 annually.

He says it won’t replace the funds the district has lost because of state and federal budget cuts…but the school board thinks it provides some relief…

"I believe they felt that every little bit helps it at this time. With the constant reduction in funding from Frankfort, local boards are being asked to do more and more...and again, a small portion, but it is very helpful to recover from this." - Rick Ross

Ross says the Mason district’s general fund balance has fallen to about a million dollars. He says it was more than four-million in 2008.
