Medical Marijuana Legislation Discussed in Frankfort

KQED

The founder of a non-profit organization called Kentuckians for Medical Marijuana told a panel of state lawmakers in Frankfort on Friday (Nov. 14) momentum is growing across the country for such legislation.

Jami Montalvo testified before the Interim Joint Committee on Licensing and Occupation.

“Currently, we have twenty-three states plus Washington, D.C., that have legalized medical cannabis, four states that after ten plus years of experience in medical cannabis have decided to regulate the industry for everyone.”

Montalvo suffers from multiple sclerosis and says federal studies have concluded that cannabis is useful in treating his disease. He says it would also benefit people who have Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease or an auto-immune disorder.

Montolvo is urging passage of what he calls the Cannabis Compassion Act. He says it would establish a tightly-controlled system that would enable people with a medical need to obtain the drug through their doctor.
