The signature "necklace" lighting on the Simon Kenton Suspension Bridge that has been darkened for two years is expected to be re-installed in just a few months.
Maysville City Manager Ray Young said Monday the design phase of the project is underway and officials with the Kentucky Transporation Cabinet expect to have the new lights installed in the spring.
The project is being coordinated by engineers at the KTC District 9 Office in Flemingsburg.
Young said the $300,000 allocated to the Transportation Cabinet earlier this year by former Gov. Steve Beshear will pay for the design, purchase and installation of the new lighting.
The lights were turned off in February 2014 after inspectors found exposed wiring, damaged or inadequate connectors, missing and damaged junction box covers and other safety hazards. Age and weather elements were cited as contributing factors to the situation.
The lights were installed in 2000 after a joint effort to raise approximately $140,000 between private citizens and a transportation grant.
Under the terms of the contract between the city and KTC officials, the city will be responsible for maintenance of the lights, regular inspections, all repairs and paying utility bills.
