Maysville Plant Closing

Maysville is losing 157 jobs.

Federal Mogul has announced it will be close its automotive parts’ distribution center in the city at the end of next June. The company reports its making the move in conjunction with an effort to reduce costs and realign its motorparts division.

Federal Mogul has had a facility in Maysville since 1993. The city nearly lost the Federal Mogul plant in 1999, but local officials were able to talk the company into keeping it open. The facility’s closure will reportedly cost Maysville an estimated $100,000 in payroll tax revenue.

The head of the Mason County Industrial Authority says it’s unlikely the Federal Mogul employees who will lose their jobs next year when the Maysville motor parts distribution center closes will be able to find other jobs in the region that pay as well. Weaver says the competition for skilled, higher-paying, production jobs has become more intense since the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect in 1994. He says his office is now concentrating on helping smaller, existing manufacturers stay in business and expand their facilities.
