Adkins Supports Options For Big Sandy Power Plant

Kentucky House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins says he’ll look at several options as he attempts to keep the Big Sandy Power Plant open in Louisa.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission recently approved a request by American Electric Power to shutter the coal-fired facility in 2015 and buy a fifty percent share of a West Virginia power generating station.

Adkins says he’ll join Lawrence County attorney Mike Hogan and Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway in asking the PSC to re-visit that decision. The Boyd County democrat also has some other ideas. One of them involves finding private investors that would buy the Big Sandy Plant.

“The other would be to go after AEP and the Commonwealth of Kentucky together. The eight billion dollars that has been set aside at the federal level to access to upgrade and retrofit existing power plants to make them new state-of-the-art power plants, new state-of-the-art facilities that would be there for generations to come.” –Rocky Adkins

Adkins says an appeal may also be filed with Franklin Circuit Court. He wants a judge to make sure the PSC followed the proper procedures when it gave AEP permission to close the Big Sandy Plant.
