Russell Theatre Renovation Continues

Terry Prather, The Ledger Independent

Once revered as the “heart of downtown Maysville,” this priceless treasure sits quietly on Third Street patiently awaiting her final phase of restoration.

In 1931 as you opened up the doors to the auditorium you would have been swept away to a world of make-believe, but today when you pull back on the heavy wooden doors and enter the auditorium you see a lifetime of broken dreams.

The Russell Theatre was once a major part of everyone’s life in this small town; it was their first job, their first date, where they met their best friend, had their first kiss, saw their first movie, and it still holds a special place in the hearts of so many. The Russell Theatre truly raised a generation.

Tim Farmer, who has three shows on KET, grew up around Maysville and dreams of one day being able to bring his family to see a movie at the Russell Theatre. He has dedicated his time, expertise, resources, and money to helping us restore this beautiful theater and he is filming a documentary about the journey to restoration.

This documentary will include stories, events we have during this time period, meetings, and will continue throughout the actual restoration process. Everyone who donates will be recognized in the credits of the documentary by name and if they donate in person they will have the chance to be in the film.

The fundraising will culminate on June 27 and 28, 2014, with a huge event on Third Street. Once the restoration is complete, this documentary will be the first film shown in the newly-renovated theatre. The Russell Theatre is Maysville’s theatre, so what better way to reopen than by premiering a film that stars the people of Maysville who pulled together and saved their beloved Russell.

Every penny raised will go directly to the restoration of the auditorium. The Russell Theatre is a 501c3 organization and all donations can be used for a tax deduction.

Donations can be mailed to: The Russell Theatre Corporation, P.O. Box 371, Maysville, Ky. 41056, and please note in the memo section of your check that the money is for “Lights, Camera, Action at the Russell Theatre.”
