Rowan Regional Jail Opposed

The mayor of Lakeview Heights and other citizens of the city will attend the October 15th meeting of the Rowan County Fiscal Court to express opposition to the construction of a proposed detention center just outside their community. David Bolt says more than 50 people attended a forum on the issue Tuesday night to voice their concerns about a 33 acre site along US 60 West between Deer Run Lane and Lakeview Heights. That location is reportedly among those being considered for the 300 bed regional jail.

Bolt says it’s not the right place for such a facility and he contends proponents should not be calling it a “jail”…

Bolt says there are also security issues because the detention center would be less than two miles from the Lakeside Christian Academy. In addition, he argues that putting a large lockup on the western end of Rowan County would be counter-productive because that’s the area with the greatest potential for development.
