Monday marks 12-years since 49 people lost their lives when Comair Flight 5191 crashed at Bluegrass Airport. The only person to survive was co-pilot James Polehinke who was piloting the aircraft when it crashed.
He missed the turn onto the main runway and tried to take-off from a runway that was too short, hitting a burm and crashing in a nearby field. The NTSB cited several mistakes that led to the accident and changes were made including requiring at least two air-traffic controllers in a tower at all times and reconfiguring the runways at Bluegrass Airport so the same mistake couldn't happen again.
A memorial for the victims was built at the Arboreteum on UK's campus.
