Volleyball Stymies Penn at the Net En Route to a Straight-Set Victory

MSU Athletics

For the third consecutive match this season, Morehead State volleyball held its opponent to a sub-.100 hitting percentage. The Eagles (9-2) defeated Penn (2-6) in straight sets this morning at the West Virginia Classic.

Morehead State-who entered the tournament limiting opponents to a .135 hitting percentage-held the Quakers to a .000 percentage, forcing as many errors as Penn had kills (24). The match also marked the fifth time this season, the Eagles have held their opponent to a hitting percentage below .100.

Playing a big factor in the Eagles forcing 24 Penn errors was Morehead State's stifling play at the net, blocking eight total shots. Junior middle blocker Karlee Reynolds led the charge, turning back four total shots, including a solo block. Redshirt senior middle blocker Jessie Wachtman and sophomore outside hitter Olivia Lohmeier added three total blocks apiece, with Lohmeier recording a solo block.

The back row scooped up 46 balls in the morning's match, led by redshirt freshman defensive specialist Taylor Hodges' 10. The 10 digs recorded Hodges her fourth match with double-digit digs this season. Redshirt sophomore setter Chandler Clark dug up nine balls, falling a dig shy of her fifth double-double of the season as she dished out 36 assists.

Offensively, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Rokey knocked down a match-high 15 kills. The total marks a season-high for Rokey and marks her fifth time in double-digits this season. A trio of Eagles (senior Jordan Jones, Lohmeier, and Wachtman) recorded seven kills apiece, as the Eagles landed 43 winners in the match.

The Eagles return to the court later this evening, facing host West Virginia in the nightcap. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET.
