Mountain Parkway Project giving travelers, workers a Thanksgiving break

Mountain Parkway Expansion

Thanksgiving travelers on the Mountain Parkway won’t experience any delays due to construction this year.

Currently, construction crews are working on projects along more than 15 miles of the parkway in Wolfe, Morgan and Magoffin counties in Eastern Kentucky. Speed limits have been reduced in work zones. In several areas, there are periodic traffic stoppages for blasting activities or to allow construction equipment to enter or cross the parkway.

This week, construction crews on the parkway plan to stop work on Thursday and Friday to ease impacts on holiday travelers. Work will resume Monday, November 27.

Travelers still should remain cautious when traveling through work zones, where there are occasional lane shifts and barrier wall placements to protect workers and the traveling public. Currently, work zones on the Mountain Parkway run between mile point 56 of the parkway and just east of Salyersville, where KY 114 intersects with U.S. 460.

The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth.

The project will widen 30 miles of the existing parkway from two lanes to four lanes, and will extend the parkway another 16 miles between Salyersville and Prestonsburg.
