Cable barrier installation, repairs starting along I-64 in Rowan, Carter, Boyd

AA Roads

Motorists using I-64 between Morehead and Ashland should expect intermittent shoulder and lane closures this summer for installation and repair of median cable barrier.

Cable barrier, a safety device that uses a fence-like structure of continuous steel cables to help prevent vehicles from crossing the median into opposing travel lanes, will be installed along 22 miles of I-64 from mile marker 137 at Morehead to mile marker 159 near Olive Hill in Carter County.

Repairs to existing cable barrier will take place between mile marker 161 at Olive Hill to the cable’s end near Ashland’s Exit 181 in Boyd County.

The work zones for these projects will occur in various locations along I-64 between mile markers 137 and 181 – Morehead to Ashland – throughout the summer and into the fall.

Crews will close portions of the inside interstate shoulder and fast lanes at work locations between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each weekday while working. Motorists should watch message boards and work zone signs for specific lane closure information and schedules, and be prepared for traffic congestion and delays.

The new cable barrier installation in Rowan and Carter counties is part of a $3.8 million Kentucky Transportation Cabinet safety enhancement project. The existing cable barrier that’s being repaired in Carter and Boyd counties was part of a similar $3.2 million safety project along 20 miles of I-64 last year.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
