According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Allen Blair, new traffic detection equipment was installed in the Kentucky 11/Kentucky 57 intersection which completed work on the bypass.
The new equipment includes new wireless in-road traffic sensors and computer-based controllers that will adjust the traffic signal timing based on the amount of traffic traveling through the intersection, Blair said.
According to Blair, the traffic sensors are the first in northeastern Kentucky.
"Such equipment is used at signalized intersections to help move higher volumes of traffic more efficiently. For example, if traffic is heavy in one direction, the traffic sensors can alert computer controllers to extend the “green light” time in that direction. It can also prompt quicker light changes when very little traffic is coming from opposing directions," Blair said.
Blair said the bypass remained open during the instillation of the signals.
The signals are active and are being monitored by engineers to make sure they continue to be in working order, according to Blair.
The $10.3 million bypass project was completed and opened to the public on Nov. 7.
Construction on the bypass began in spring 2013, after being awarded to H.G. Mays. The Walker Company of Mount Sterling, also worked on the project as a subcontractor.
Blair said the project is completely funded through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and should be completed by fall. Motorists will continue to be updated as work continues.
"Construction is still being finalized in some areas, which could include roadway lighting at some locations next year. Motorists should watch for intermittent work zones until all construction is complete," Blair said.
