Highway 68 Closed For Repairs

Central Kentucky News

Road repairs along a busy connector between Lexington and Mercer County could impact business and cultural activities the next few weeks.

State transportation crews are working on a three mile stretch of U.S. Highway 68 between Coghill Lane to the Brooklyn Bridge over the Kentucky River.  Cabinet Spokeswoman Natasha Lacy says the work focuses on maintaining a safe route.

"Slide repair work is needed, due to safety, having a precautionary situation where we take care of falling rock or perhaps a sliding situation from a hillside or mountainside, so it doesn't impact traffic.” –Natasha Lacy

Lacy says the work should continue for another two weeks.

Mercer County Chamber of Commerce Director Jill Cutler says the winding two-lane road still gets its share of retail traffic.

"I am surprised at the traffic that 68 gets and it is quite a bit.  And I would say 127 and 68 are both heavily used for merchandising, retailing, bringing goods and services back and forth." –Jill Cutler

Cutler says Shaker Village along highway 68 could see the most direct impact.  She says an antique show is scheduled next weekend.  Cutler advises using Bluegrass Parkway and highway 127 as alternate routes.
