Alexa Colemire has been named interim director of the Mason County Public Library.

Colemire will be filling the position recently vacated by Director Steve Parrott, according to MCPL Board of Trustees President David Hord.

Hord said Colemire, who has been with the library for five years, was selected as interim director after Parrott announced his tentative resignation in March.

“At the time, his announcement was tentative, because he wasn’t sure of the start date of his new position,” Hord said. “We discussed placing (Colemire) in that position for now, because we needed to have someone fill it.”

According to Hord, Colemire was chosen because of her qualifications and ability to lead the library.

“She’s been with the library for several years now, she’s qualified, she has the credentials,” he said. “We know she’ll do a good job with the library.”

Hord said the permanent position will be looked at once concerns over the spread of COVID-19 have subsided some.

Colemire’s official first day as interim director was Tuesday.

Parrott said he chose to leave after being offered a position with the Kentucky Department for Library and Archives as the West Region Consultant. He will be taking care of 31 libraries from Bowling Green to the western edge of the state.

“About 13 years ago, I worked with a couple of consultants and I knew that was what I wanted to do if I ever had the opportunity. This came open and I couldn’t turn it down,” Parrott said.

Parrott was hired as director of MCPL in 2018, after Valerie Zempter retired.

Hord said Parrott will be missed.

“Steve did a good job with the library,” Hord said. “He kept the library organized and we’ve been through a lot since he’s been here, challenges with the building, the construction started and there were changes in personnel. He’s handled everything well. We will miss him and we wish him and his family the best.”
