The approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids age 5-11 is seeming more and more likely in the coming weeks.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Vaccines and Related Biological Advisory Committee is set to meet October 26th. That following Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet to discuss vaccines for children in that age group.
Last week, ABC News reported a private phone call from the White House advising governors across the nation to prepare to start giving those shots. Kentucky Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack echoed that news during the Commonwealth’s COVID-19 update Monday.
The Department for Public Health has also received information regarding the differences in dosing quantities. Dr. Stack says moving forward, the adult formula will be shipped in vials with purple caps, and the vials with children’s doses will have an orange cap.
There aren’t any shortages for the children’s vaccine expected, though there could be delays in the early weeks due to initial allocations and shipping. The number of children who fall within that age range in the Kentucky is estimated to be 388,896.
