Mental health series presented by MSPR and campus partners

Morehead State Public Radio (WMKY)

Morehead State Public Radio, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, Social Work & CriminologyCounseling & Health Services, and the JED Foundation, will present a five-part radio series throughout May 2026 in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The series, “Call to Mind,” is produced by American Public Media and hosted by veteran journalist Angela Davis. The hour-long programs feature sound-rich storytelling and expert insight, highlighting the experiences of individuals navigating mental health challenges and exploring ways to support well-being.

Programs will air on MSPR Fridays at 6 p.m. with repeat broadcasts Sundays at 5 p.m. throughout May.

"Talking about mental health is a critical step to understanding and acceptance. It benefits our well-being and the loved ones in our lives, as well as the well-being of our communities. As a partner in presenting the ‘Call to Mind’ radio series, WMKY hopes the discussion sparks an openness to listen and talk about mental health issues," said Paul Hitchcock (Class of 1988), general manager of MSPR.

The five-part series will explore a range of timely and impactful topics:

  • The Strain of Stress (May 1 and May 3) examines everyday pressures, from finances to social challenges, affects mental health, and increases risks for conditions such as anxiety and depression.
  • Weathering the Storm: Climate Change and Mental Health (May 8 and May 10) highlight the emotional and psychological toll of environmental change, including climate-related anxiety, grief, and displacement.
  • The Reason for Sleep (May 15 and May 17) explores the essential role of sleep in overall health and its deep connection to mental well-being.
  • Immigration and the Challenge to Belong (May 22 and May 24) focuses on the unique mental health challenges faced by immigrants adjusting to life in the United States.
  • The Fifth Branch (May 29 and May 31) examines innovative crisis-response systems that deploy trained mental health professionals instead of law enforcement in certain emergency situations.

Each episode combines personal stories from across the country with expert perspectives, offering listeners a deeper understanding of mental health issues and strategies for resilience.
