Eastern Kentucky is making significant progress toward repairing and replacing water infrastructure. Officials said given the area’s rough terrain; water facilities face a challenge to both build and maintain adequate water lines.
Governor Andy Beshear said many counties in the region are continuously hit by flooding causing many of the older water systems to fail and require repair.
“Team Kentucky received $9 million through the water supply replacement program, and we've been working to complete five projects in Breathitt, Knott, and Perry counties. A few weeks ago, we completed two projects in Breathitt and Knott counties that upgraded water lines and repaired infrastructure,” said Beshear.
Governor Beshear said these projects are important to the health and well-being of Kentucky families as clean, safe, reliable drinking water should not be in question for anyone in the Commonwealth.
“The Breathitt Multi-Sites project repaired infrastructure that was severely damaged in the 2022 floods. This $ 1.7 million project replaced over 6,000 ft of water line, which improved service to 950 Kentucky households,” said Beshear.
Additionally, The Big Branch to Montgomery Creek project in Knott County is now also complete, improving service to over 2,500 households.
