Legal Aid of the Bluegrass is partnering with Morehead State University to help members of the community who are going through an amicable divorce. MSU students enrolled in the Pro Se Divorce Clinic help litigants represent themselves while also gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Kennedy Little is a legal studies major and the student coordinator for the clinic. She said the clinic gives students insight into the legal process and allows them to become more confident in their own abilities to practice law.

“I think it’s also given me a lot of ways to be a better problem solver when it comes to the legal system and also I think patience when it comes to dealing with people who maybe aren’t too familiar with the legal system,” said Little.

The clinic’s coordinator is MSU alum and professor Christopher Nunley. He said the class not only serves students but also helps the community through what many consider to be an overwhelming process.

“It’s not as daunting when it’s all in front of you and you have someone explaining it to you. What I want my students to do through the clinic class is to take them through the steps and make them feel more empowered in being able to represent themselves,” said Nunley.

Students in the clinic are tasked with walking litigants through the steps of filing for a divorce and are responsible for making sure all proper documentation reaches the opposing party and the judge presiding over the case.

Organizers said the clinic makes it easier for anybody going through a divorce to navigate the legal system and retake a dignity or confidence they may have lost through the daunting process of divorce.
