Sawstone Brewing Company has partnered with the Fodder Pop-up Kitchen to supply Morehead families with free meals this giving season. Every Monday in November starting at 5 p.m., anyone can pick-up food or stay and eat a meal, no questions asked.
In October, over 2,000 families in Rowan County received SNAP benefits and Sarah Nickell, one of the owners of Sawstone Brewing Company, said she wanted to make sure their needs were met.
“Well, it’s the giving time of year right now, but also with the government shutdown and the EBT funds not being dispersed to families in eastern Kentucky, especially. A lot of folks depend on that, and we wanted to make sure that people got fed so we threw this together very quickly,” said Nickell.
Nickell said there has been large show of support from the community.
“We had it in our minds that we were going to bankroll it ourselves but when we ask for volunteers to help serve, it turned into people wanting to donate, businesses wanting to donate. People have donated monetary, they’ve donated ingredients, they’ve brought us non-perishable food items to just hand out to people.”
Organizers said although they hope it is not necessary, Sawstone and Fodder may be able to continue through the holidays if the support from the community continues.
People who want to volunteer or donate can contact Nickell through Facebook at Sarah Evans Nickell, Jake Mincey with Fodder Pop-up Kitchen, or call Sawstone at 606-780-1151. Donations are also being accepted at Whimsy Works.
