The city of Morehead recently received two awards from the Kentucky Main Street Program, which aims to encourage downtown revitalization and economic development within the context of historical preservation. Officials said the program regularly seeks out examples of exceptional innovation and leadership within downtown communities.
Jennifer Anderson of Holbrook Drugs was awarded Outstanding Main Street Partner for her collaborative role within the community, and the Battson Oats Commons received Best Outdoor Space Improvements. Tony Pence, Executive Director of Downtown Morehead Inc., said the Commons was recognized for its role in the community.
“Well basically for what it is. It’s a newly created space in town that won an award for being that. Then Jennifer won her award for the efforts that she puts forth for the downtown area, her business, and helping other downtown merchants organize events, that type of thing,” said Pence.
Pence added that the Commons has been an important addition to the area, and was something the city lacked beforehand.
“These are very successful things, Battson Oates Commons is a destination in our county and city. We didn’t have that four or five years ago, so it’s nice for other people away from here to recognize what we’ve done,” said Pence.
Pence said community engagement is a year-round effort, and he’s glad to see locals and visitors enjoying themselves.
