A new quick-build pedestrian crossing will soon come to Morehead, aimed at improving pedestrian safety. The crossing will be installed at the intersection between Bridge Street and US 60. Cameras will be set up to monitor pedestrian activity, providing data for future infrastructure projects. Officials said cameras may also be set up at US 32 and Main Street, US 32 and US 60, and other high traffic areas.
Edna Schack is a council member for the city of Morehead. She said the Bridge Street crossing was chosen for temporary crossing adjustments because of the present and future pedestrian needs of the area.
“City Park as well as we have a Housing Authority and apartments, and new rent assisted apartments going up, students live over there. Lots of people live in that area and they need to get across US 60, and I see a lot of them walking,” said Schack.
Officials said Morehead has minimal data regarding pedestrian safety. Statewide though, last year 96 pedestrian deaths occurred, and 937 crashes involved a pedestrian.
Schack said the community should get involved in these developments.
“When we do the quick build, we'll be announcing it and warning people that it's going to be a little different out there, and we would like people to come down and use it, and get a feel for it and give feedback. Do you feel better now? And so on and so forth,” said Schack.
The temporary crossing at US 60 and Bridge Street will be made using traffic cones and paint. The initiative is part of the Complete Streets Leadership Academy, and a $22,000 grant from the CDC. Officials said the enhanced intersection will be in place by the end of May and will be in operation for 48 hours.
