Elliott County has begun dedicating more resources to its tourism industry, despite its small population. The local Tourism Council, which was reformed in 2017 with just a few members has since doubled in size.
The kickoff to this summer’s event lineup is Bridge Day, scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Laurel Gorge Cultural Center. The celebration will feature demonstrations from three local farmers, a presentation by the Little Sandy Fire Department, and a free hot dog lunch.
Judy Craig is the Elliott County Tourism President. She said the festivities started with humble beginnings.
“There is a Laurel Gorge Iron Bridge down there and I think it was four years ago they redid the iron bridge and then there was a dedication. So that day we tried to do some fun little, you know, chalk painting and blowing bubbles off the bridge, kayaking, something like that, and it's just kind of grown,” said Craig.
Craig added, this year is predicted to have their biggest crowd yet.
“Last year, when we had that one demonstration, I believe we had at least 25 people that showed up, and for our area that's huge. And we offered free hot dogs and water. And so, this year I'm thinking we should - well, we have gotten 50 hot dogs, we're expecting 50 people - I’ll put it that way,” said Craig.
The county is set to host other activities this summer, including Minnie Adkins Day, a Fourth of July celebration, the Fiddler’s Convention and the Tobacco Festival. More information on these events can be found here.
