As warmer weather approaches, Carter Caves State Resort Park has updated their recreation group opportunities for K-12 students.

Activities include commercial cave tours, guided hikes, historical presentations, archery, canoeing, kayaking, tomahawk throwing, and more. Stream stomping is an ecology activity that lets participants get hands on experience in the water learning about the wildlife that calls the state’s waterways home.

Autumn Barnett is the park’s Program Services Leader. She said one of their missions is to present educational opportunities.

“We have a really good staff with us, and we are trying to diverse what we know out to these schools because we are trying to get environmental education back out there,” said Barnett. “Especially with just even our summer programming we are really trying to focus on environmental education because Carter Caves truly offers so much even outside of the caves, and we want to be able to show people that.”

Barnett said there are a variety of activities for all ages to enjoy.

“We try to do things like living history which is our program where we show people how Appalachian settlers would have used this land and how they utilized the environment back then,” said Barnett. “Then we also have things like owl pellet dissection where we give you owl pellets and students will go through and try to comb out and see what owls eat and we do a whole lesson about owls around Kentucky.”

Officials said they can also provide environmental education in the classroom, aligning with whatever curriculum students are learning at school. More information and scheduling can be found on the Carter Caves State Resort Park Facebook page.
