Upcoming documentary promises insight into AppHarvest bankruptcy

Samantha Morrill

Stakeholders and others interested in AppHarvest may soon learn more about its bankruptcy. Some Morehead State University students are creating a documentary exploring the company’s ups and downs since its establishment.

Student Evan Glover said the most difficult part of making this film is getting people to open up about their experiences.

“We all saw the big stories when it closed, and then after that everybody kind of clammed up. So, it’s been hard to get people who are willing to talk about their experiences, to talk now, now that everything is settled,” said Glover.

The filmmakers said little is publicly known about the circumstances surrounding the company’s bankruptcy. The agricultural startup prepared to close its doors in July of 2023.

Student Danyon Snell said his goal for the documentary is only presenting facts.

“One thing I want people to take away from it is, you know, I don't want to just paint a picture. I want people to hear the story of what happened, the facts, the details, and then by the end of the documentary, maybe come up with their own opinion on what happened. Yeah,” said Snell.

The documentary, titled Overripe, will trace the company’s journey from its founding to bankruptcy. The project is set to premiere at the Hazard Community and Technical College Library in late April.

Students Connor Hammonds and Luke Dixon are also part of the production team on the documentary.
