Across Kentucky individuals, organizations, and businesses have been collecting items to donate to victims of recent flooding in eastern Kentucky. One of these groups in Morehead is collecting items, especially for kids. Sawstone Brewing is partnering with Wee Miss Bluegrass Belle’s Royalty’s Eastern Kentucky Representative, two-year-old Eleanor Nickell.
Eleanor’s mother, Sarah Nickell, said she and her husband have had conversations with the young pageanter about the flooding in eastern Kentucky.
“We’ve shown her pictures and talked to her about what has happened to other children her age and she says that she wants to help the children,” said Nickell. “So, any new items that are specifically for children, baby wipes, toothbrushes, we’re really pushing for those kinds of things.”
The list includes diapers in all sizes, baby blankets, cleaning supplies, and non-perishable food items. Cash donations are also accepted and will be sent to Kentucky Mutual Aid.
Nickell said it’s important for people to help their neighbors.
“I mean, that’s just what Appalachia is all about. We’ve always been tight-knit communities. I was a victim of the 2012 tornado in West Liberty and my neighbors showed up for me. Hazard is my mother’s childhood home. We’re all connected. So, it’s incredibly important that we all show up for each other,” said Nickell.
Donations can be dropped off at Sawstone Brewing in Morehead until midnight Friday.
Nickell said the items will be delivered to the Sipp Theater in Paintsville Saturday, February 22, at 8 a.m. to be distributed to several of the affected counties.
