Meteorologists report the eastern Kentucky region may be in for a round of colder temperatures next week.
John Pelton, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said rain is expected throughout this week and the next, and that over the weekend temperatures are expected to fall below normal. Pelton said just because that’s what’s expected, doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed.
“Been kind of moving around by as much as a day or more when that might occur. So, a lot of uncertainty out there with timing and amounts and what types we might get. So, it’s just kind of something for people to keep an eye on the forecast and monitor later forecasts to see what’s going on as we get toward the end of the week and over the weekend. We’ll have a better handle on what we might see next week,” said Pelton.
Pelton added that colder temperatures also don’t guarantee snow or ice and could just result in cold rain across the region.
“Could always have a scenario where temperatures average a little bit below normal. But it still remained rain, so you just have a cold rain. Not saying that’s necessarily what’s going to happen. Even though that seven-day period the temperatures could be below normal, and you have some days that are near or even above normal within that time period,” said Pelton.
The average monthly temperature in February is nearly 40 degrees. There is a slight chance of a wintry mix at the beginning of next week. More weather information can be found on weather.gov.
