This January is Human Trafficking Awareness Prevention month in Kentucky. Officials said this annual effort aims to educate commercial motor vehicle drivers, motor carriers, law enforcement officers, and the public about human trafficking, the signs to look for, and what to do about suspected trafficking.
First Lady Britainy Beshear said she’s proud to be an advocate for survivors of trafficking.
“This horrendous crime is a modern from of slavey where people are exploited through violence, fraud, or coercion. It tears families apart and leaves victims fearful and hopeless, not knowing where to turn or who they can trust,” Beshear said. “In January we are recognizing human trafficking prevention month to raise awareness about the crime and to educate the Kentuckians on how to recognize the signs and take action.”
She added that as many as 24.9 million men, women and children are sold into prostitution, domestic servitude, or other forced labor around the globe.
First Lady Beshear said the Beshear Administration and Kentucky State Police troopers are dedicated to preventing and ending this crime in the commonwealth.
“KSP participated in the Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative, an annual program from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliances that teaches the signs to look for and what to do if you suspect someone is being trafficked,” Beshear said. “KSP also continues to educate the public by sharing this information on social media.”
