The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced 2025 “fee-free” dates for the Daniel Boone National Forest. On these days, fees are waived for all park recreation areas, except for concession sites and reservable group-use areas.

Upcoming fee-free dates include Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which falls on January 20, and President’s Day weekend, between February 15 and 17. Other dates throughout the year include National Fishing and Boating Week, National Get Outdoors Day, Juneteenth, and Veterans Day.

Mary O’Malley, Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Forest Service, said Daniel Boone National Forest provides the community with more fee-free days compared to other National Parks.

“We've included several others just for the Daniel Boone National Forest, because we do charge fees, and we know that our area in eastern Kentucky, they have difficulty paying those all throughout the year. So, making it more accessible for folks to get out and explore was really our intention with waiving fees,” said O’Malley

O’Malley added most parks see an uptick in visitors during these events.

“We do see a good number of visitors on fee-free days, but I think often that has more to do with the fact that most of our free fee-free days are aligned with federal holidays. The upcoming Martin Luther King Junior Day is often a day that folks will have off and we just entice them a little more to come visit the forest by waving fees on that day as well,” said O’Malley.
