Eastern Kentucky is expected to get another two to four inches of snow over the next 24 hours. Forecasters said flakes will start falling around 10 a.m. in central regions and move northeast throughout Friday afternoon and evening. It’s expected to reach the Morehead area around noon.
Philomon Geertson is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson. He said this system is not expected to drop heavy wet snow.
“This snow should be relatively dry, especially near I-64 and it will be somewhat fluffy. It’s likely to be a little fluffier than the snow that you saw with the storm system Sunday into Monday, but not as fluffy as the flurries that we’ve had the last couple of days,” said Geertson.
Geertson said travel will be impacted Friday evening.
“If you’re traveling, be sure to have a full tank of gas, have some sand or cat litter in case you need it because the roads are likely to become snow-covered and slippery. Other good things to have in your vehicle would be things like a first aid kit, blankets, small shovel, and some non-perishable food,” said Geertson.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet urges people to limit their travel during snow events so that snow removal crews and emergency responders can access the roads more easily.
Geertson said it’s important to stay aware of weather alerts and notices while wintery conditions are expected. The forecaster added there is a small warm up expected following this system. However, colder temperatures will return next week, meaning this round of snow will be sticking around for a while.
