Rowan schools certified for ‘Family-Friendly’ commitment

Clay Wallace

Officials report student academic outcomes are heavily impacted by their family’s involvement in their education. Multiple schools across the Rowan County district have been recognized for their work to raise family and community engagement.

Rowan County Preschool Center, Clearfield Elementary, Rodburn Elementary, and Rowan County Senior High School were among about 50 schools recognized in the 2024 cohort of the Prichard Committee’s Family Friendly Schools Certification.

Felicia Cumings Smith, Prichard Committee board chair, delivered a proclamation of these certifications on behalf of the Governor’s office. She spoke about connecting families with their children’s education.

“From early learning centers to high schools, these institutions have shown that family engagement is pivotal to improved academic performance, increased student motivation and wellness, and healthy community bonds,” said Cumings Smith.

To be granted the Prichard Committee’s ‘Family Friendly’ certification, schools must fill out an application which is reviewed by a group of families, educators, and community organizations. Cumings Smith said family-friendly schools must work to strengthen the relationship between educators and families through innovative practices and learning opportunities.

“Putting in the effort to engage parents and community around them is not easy, and the certification process is extensive. It’s not just a recognition, it’s not just an award,” said Cumings Smith. “This is a certification of your efforts.”

Tygart Creek Elementary in Carter County and Menifee Central School also received a ‘Family Friendly’ certification this year.

This round of certifications follows recent data from the Prichard Committee’s Collaborative for Families and Schools. In the report, both teachers and parents showed more confidence in family engagement, and the number of parents who reported ever attending school events rose by 25%.
