The holiday season is seen as a time of celebration, but for many, it can also bring stress. Experts said it’s essential to take time for self-care, especially when managing the responsibilities of being a caregiver.

Caring for a family member during the holidays can be overwhelming. AARP experts recommend joining support groups, which can be found through the Area Agency on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Amy Goyer is AARP’s Caregiving Expert. She said collaborating with family members can reduce caregiver and care recipient anxiety.

“My grandmother really relied on my uncle for all of her health issues, because he taught health in high school. Now, maybe you don't think that's a credential that your loved one should have, but if your mother's perspective is she wants your brother in a conversation about that, make sure he's a part of that conversation,” said Goyer.

Family dynamics can add another layer of stress. Officials report nearly 40 percent of families have open disagreements during the holidays, and one in four Americans report being estranged from at least one family member. To help manage anxiety, officials recommend maintaining healthy habits, like practicing yoga, meditation, and walking in nature before outings.

Warren Herbert is CEO of Homecare Association of Louisiana. He said planning ahead for family gatherings is helpful for reducing anxiety.

“I think that it's important to know that anger, stress, and resentment will happen during the holidays, and so anticipating that in some family gatherings. You know there will be someone that you may know already is going to push a button or you,” said Herbert.

Experts said that although the winter months are stressful for many, with self-care and proper planning, the season can be more peaceful and enjoyable.
