A Rowan County outreach program needs volunteers for upcoming Christmas event

Rowan County Christmas will soon be giving out gifts and food vouchers to families and the elderly. Board member Rhonda Holley said they are busiest starting a few days before distribution, which is December 13. That is why they are putting out the call for volunteers to help out at the Carl Perkins Center.

Holley said there are several things the nonprofit needs help completing.

“The volunteers would help us sort the donations out into age groups and genders because we’ll have different age groups for boys and girls on different sides of the room. And then for the seniors they would take that over and separate it into male and female. And get those things all bundled and ready for our distribution day. So, three days ahead of that we are really busy little elves,” said Holley.

She added most Rowan County Christmas members have day jobs and are volunteers themselves.

“Not all board members get off from work to help come and do this. So, it’s all of us that are retired or don’t work that are the ones that are there all of the time. But it takes all together about 25 people to do it all,” Holley said.

Holley said volunteers are needed starting a few days before the event to help with the set up. Rowan County Christmas helps more than 500 families and seniors in the community every year.
