The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 6 p.m. Thursday until 7 a.m. Friday. Officials said snow is expected with total accumulations of up to two inches.

Snow showers started around 10:30 Thursday morning and are expected to pick up in the evening when a disturbance rolls through the area. Forecasters said snow will gradually change to rain Friday morning.

Dustin Jordan is a meteorologist with the NWS in Jackson. He said the most notable snow accumulation is likely to come in overnight.

“Most of that will probably be on grassy surfaces and elevated surfaces, really as those areas where they may get colder, maybe some slick spots on the roads but for the most part, they’ll probably be limited to grassy surfaces and elevated surfaces,” said Jordan.

Jordan said road conditions will be most hazardous Thursday evening.

“Maybe there’ll be a little more snow falling and it might get some slushie accumulations on the roads. So, really staying off the roads tonight is probably just the best thing, because you’ll also get some reductions in visibility and that can also make things a little bit worse,” said Jordan.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recommends anyone driving through hazardous road conditions use the four P’s of safe winter driving – prepare your vehicle, plan your travels, prevent crashes, and protect yourself in an emergency.
